講 題: Language acquisition in a trilingual context

摘要:Since 1997 the policy of liang wen san yu 兩文三語 "biliteracy and trilingualism" has set the goal of a trilingual society for Hong Kong. At the same time, research conducted by our Childhood Bilingualism Research Centre (CBRC) has progressed to trilingualism in tandem over the years. In the past decade, the study of bilingual acquisition has developed substantially in the field at large and led to a better understanding of how children acquire two languages in early childhood. On the theoretical side, mechanisms of cross-linguistic influence in bilingual acquisition have been elucidated, with structural overlap and language dominance among the factors recognized. These factors extend naturally to the case of childhood trilingualism, where cross-linguistic interactions are correspondingly more complex (Yip & Matthews 2010). Empirically, Hong Kong case studies have demonstrated the feasibility of trilingual acquisition given various environments in which regular trilingual input is provided. A cross-sectional study (Chan et al 2017) addressing relative clauses in trilingual children suggests some ways in which trilingual children are distinct from bilinguals, while demonstrating positive transfer from Cantonese to Mandarin.
